A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk (along the briny beach)

My mum still knows the entire Walrus and the Carpenter from Alice through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There (not quite as catchy a title as Alice in Wonderland)- she had to learn it by heart when she was at school, and somehow remembers it over 40 years later.. she's fond of reciting it when walking along a beach (obvs). Sadly no beach here, but a pleasant walk through Highgate Wood all the same.
And apart from the shoes (Primark) I'm recycling super old clothes- a Topshop top from about 5 years ago and old faded black jeans.
A four day break from work has arrived at a perfect time- on Thursday I learnt that the bosses have definitely decided that sick days don't exist, so if you're ill it's taken out of our measly 20 days a year holiday. If you have flu, it's not really a valid excuse for not coming in, apparently. And what about "statutory" sick pay? Hell no, they say, then everyone will take 30 days a year because obvs we can't be trusted and will use them for hangover days and other follies. To add insult to injury- if you had a paid sick day last year, it'll now be counted as holiday because they're backdating their new policy...
The problem is everyone else's apathy- so far I'm not bothered in that I'm not ill too often and I actually don't care if I have few holiday days as I have no money to be jetting off for long periods of time, but I'm just incensed by the principle of it. But if we all did something (citizen's advice bureau maybe) then surely they'd realise it's illegal?? Oh and the list of blocked websites now include BBC, Ryanair, Easyjet, Wikipedia, Ebay and Amazon. Cos we is kids that will spend all day researching Tudor history instead of working innit..

That's not too good hearing of the sick day situation and blocking! Hope you enjoy your well deserved break.

  3. It always nice to find some ald favourites in the wardrobe, like you have new clothes haha!
Not good about the sickness situation at work, I wear companies make up their own rules with no regard of the law!

  6. That's absolutely absurd what they're doing.. I'm really wondering how they justify counting sick days as holidays.

On a different note, you are a vision, and I hope your weekend is well.

  14. aww i love alice and wonderland! pretty photos and it sucks how they don't give sick days - when i had a part time job they weren't paid but they also weren't taken out of our holiday! x

  15. Ugh, the lengths that your work has gone to! That's ridiculous and very unfair, what if you were struck down with tonsilitis which left you bedridden for 4 days? That's not your fault, or theirs, but to force you to take less holiday as a result... being genuinely ill is not legitimate happy time off work, you feel like death! Grrr! This has made me mad too! If you need help writing an angry letter, you know where I am ♥ Claire @ Jazzpad

  16. God, your workplace sounds a little like mine...at my place we don't get paid for sick days & (measly) statutory sick pay only kicks in after three days. Backdating the policy at your place is totally out of order though! Sounds like a similar story with holiday entitlement... I only get 15 days plus the 8 bank holidays (so having to work on the 29th!). Our bosses are just taking the piss, clearly :( Anyway, on a lighter note I love your top, the print is so pretty. Enjoy your bank hol & try to forget all about work! :)

  18. lovely spring outfit, love the pattern! :) and I'd be outraged by the principle too, is there no union you can talk to? how annoying, even if you're not the type of person to push your luck and take loads of days off, painting everyone with the same brush is wrong! hope it gets sorted deary xxx

  19. aww, love this spring look... so pretty & chic, definitely something that I would wear -you look gorgeous!

And eeek no sick days? That is SO the worst and not very profitable for the company either. When people don't get sick days they tend to come to work, get everyone else sick and then productivity and profits go down. Plus (grrr) so not fair to the employees. Hehe, ok rants aside have a great weekend hun. xx veronika

  21. Gorgeous photos and outfit! That is majorly annoying about your work, especially seeing as you don't get much holiday as it is!

Your blog is beautiful, and you write really well :).

  22. Um, I'm really not convinced that what your company's doing is actually legal! Plus they shouldn't be allowed to substantially change your terms and conditions without making you sign a new contract. Sounds like you'd be best off well out of there.

On a happier note, I absolutely love that top of yours. I'm having a real top shortage at the moment and am madly coveting all the nice ones I see on blogs.

  23. Your bosses sound terrible! Like Alex said, that's actually totally illegal (I dont actually know for sure but it sounds awful).
Otherwise, your day with your mum looks lovely and it's so amazing that she can recite that whole book! http://thearcenciel.blogspot.com/

  28. Bah! That sounds ridiculous! I never understand why people think they can get farther with their employees by bullying them rather then providing an awesome working experience. Anyways, I love breathing new life into old pieces! Such a nice summery look!
