Volunteering at Casa Latina- I arrived on Tuesday and was told to be on reception (essentially a small desk with an aged computer, 4 portable telephones and two pencils), with another volunteer, Patrice. He explained how diary management works (people can ring up requesting an appointment to see a lawyer for an immigration/benefits/tax/family matter and we have to fit them in) and how to register new clients, and that was about it. Wednesday there was already a volunteer there so I spent most of the day staring into space, being shown nice Bolivian scarves online by said volunteer, and checking my Blackberry- though I was told we weren't really allowed to do so, even when there is nothing else to do. I'm talking Spanish the entire time which is great, though not easy to take a call from an old Bolivian woman demanding an appointment I can tell you. Anyway I'm also hoping to be involved with an online magazine called Ventana Latina, helping with marketing, fundraising, research etc. Which sounds more promising.
On other news, me and D went to see The Smyths on Friday night. Yes, they're a Smiths tribute band, and they sell out venues apparently. It was quite fun to start with, but after their interval we stood upstairs, looking down on the crowd (lots of bald men) and thought it was verging more on karaoke.
